Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolors, oils, impasto, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software.

Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer.

The main difference between digital and traditional painting is the non-linear process. That is, an artist can often arrange their painting in layers that can be edited independently. Also, the ability to undo and redo strokes frees the artist from a linear process. But digital painting is limited in how it employs the techniques and study of a traditional painter because of the surface differences and lack of physicality.

The digital artist has at their disposal several tools not available to the traditional painter. Some of these include: a virtual palette consisting of millions of colors, almost any size canvas or media, and the ability to take back mistakes, as well as erasers, pencils, spray cans, brushes, combs, and a variety of 2D and 3D effect tools. A graphics tablet allows the artist to work with precise hand movements simulating a real pen and drawing surface.

About the Artist

Born in 1958 Drew comes from a family of artists and musicians and found himself creating art at an early age. Developing his drawing and designing talents alone would have been a life time challenge for most people, but that would have been too easy.

The art bug was biting Drew and he knew that he need to get that aspect of himself involved somehow. In 1981 Drew began attending The Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, Ca. This was and still is the world's premier art schools. One of Drew's roommates while in school was Grant Larson. As a student at Art Center, Grant did the first sketches of the Porsche Boxter in the house where Drew lived. Drew took full advantage of the Grants influence and the services of Art Center and received a rare scholarship, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company.

The artistic side took an interesting turn and landed Drew in the animation industry for 12 years. While this was a diversion from his previously industrial lifestyle, it did hone his art and design skills immensely. While working in this field Drew was a skilled background, character and prop artist, as well as an art director, director and producer for studios including Warner Brothers, Disney, DreamWorks and MGM animation. You can find his credits on movies such as All Dogs go to Heaven, Casper the friendly Ghost, Johnny Bravo and more.

Now living in North Carolina, Drew combines his computer skills with his art background and works on illustrations, graphic design, 3D animation and added digital paintings to his portfolio. View a few samples of Drew's artwork.
